Caretos e-Guides

This Project aims to use audio guides to streamline the presentation of intangible heritage in the village of Podence, based on the winter rituals of the Carnival of Podence. This will allow visitors access to a new tool, which will innovate the entire exhibition discourse around Carnival. Instead of being restricted to the Museum space, visitors will be able to visit the village streets, listening to the stories built by their residents.

The idea for this project appeared during the restructuring plan for the Casa do Careto museum, in Podence. Changing the exhibition discourse, with the introduction of new digital tools and new content, the idea of creating audio guides was proposed, which instead of being restricted to the physical space of the museum, would take the tourist to walk through the streets of the village of Podence, which are the main stage during the three days of Carnival.

To this end, and in order to create content that is appealing to the visitor and transforms the museum experience, the audio guides will be associated with a mobile application, which will take the tourist to visit other important points in the village. Wanting to overcome the visual-only barrier of museums, audio guides will also serve as an innovative tool, leading the visitor to an experience that will be more sensorial. In addition to an explanation of the fundamental parts of Carnival, testimonies from people and characteristic sounds (cowbells) may be introduced. When used in the application, it will show a set of routes, which in addition to taking you to see Podence, also take you to see the paths taken by the Caretos.

The routes and guides will be co-created with the residents, including the older residents and their descendants in the construction of the discourse in which the village will be showcased to visitors, giving them the tools and power to decide how they want their heritage to be represented.
