The ENCC has recently started to highlight one topic per year, that we look at through the lense of several events and activities, in order to create continuity of learning and knowledge and to be able to immediately reinvest the results in the following activity. In 2019-2020, the topic is Inspired by Diversity.
Despite progress in recent years, diversity inside cultural organisations is still lacking. We want to put a special focus on this issue while building a multiyear plan to improve equality in our network (and beyond), looking both at cultural centres' staff and audiences.
This focus on diversity and equality will structure several of our activities:
1 - BECC 2020 staff exchange/training is dedicated to Working with Hyperdiverse Audiences. The training will bring together 12 young cultural managers to work on defining what kind of cultural centre is needed for diverse communities today, how organisations can empower active participation of the different members of their community, how they can contribute to building societies that are more open and democratic, and how to build and manage teams working inside these organisations.
2 - Diversity, equality and inclusion in culture and cultural organisations was one of the priority topics for our Incubator 2020 support scheme for European cooperation projects. The 6 projects selected for support and mentoring will be announced on March 5th.
3 - With the help of equality expert Zita Holbourne, we are launching a survey to gather data on ENCC members' practices and initiatives for diversity and equality in their organisations, and on what further support they need. The results of this survey will be a starting point for our next actions.
4 - Zita Holbourne will present a report on the survey results, as well as a draft equality charter for our network, to the ENCC General Assembly in June.
5 - She will also give a workshop on diversity and equality at Cultural Impact Now, on 4-5 June in Denmark, where participants will brainstorm on the survey report and create their own action plans to address equality and diversity in their organisations and in their audiences.
6 - To conclude this first step and go further, we will draft a plan of action for the network on diversity and equality for the 3-4 coming years. We will invite our members to reflect with us on how to incorporate equality, diversity and inclusion in all of our upcoming activities and programmes, as well as in our network policy and governance.
