INTRACOMP: intercultural and transcultural competence through collaborative cultural expression

This three-year project, funded by Horizon Europe, will prompt artists and academics from 12 countries across Europe and the South Pacific to create new futures for arts education.

We are delighted to announce that we are part of a new Horizon Europe project that will develop global, regional and national educational frameworks and policy directives for arts and culture.

“What is the role of arts education in an era of forced mass migration?" This is one of the questions that laid the foundation for INTRACOMP. As climate mobility, political and environmental disasters and economic collapse increase across the globe, the way we learn to collaborate and participate through the arts will have a huge impact on social inclusion, diversity and equality in the future.

Coordinated by Nord University, the project is led by Nicholas Rowe, UNESCO Chair in Dance and Social Inclusion and a professor in Dance Studies at Nord University in Norway and the University of Auckland in Aotearoa New Zealand. The consortium brings together universities and community-based arts organisations in Norway, Belgium, Germany, Finland, Italy, the UK, Serbia, Slovakia, Greece, Hungary, Aotearoa New Zealand and Papua New Guinea. With a focus on forced migration and social cohesion, INTRACOMP seeks to redefine the role of arts in education.

In this ambitious quest, INTRACOMP will gather leading artists and academics from Nord University, the University of Auckland, the University of Verona, the University of Jyväskylä, the University of Hildesheim, the European Network of Cultural Centres, In Place of War, the Institute of Papua New Guinea Studies, LATRA, Kulturanova, Divadlo Bez Domova, Pro Progressione and Sutta Scupa. Over the next three years, this transdisciplinary, cross-sectoral team will work to transform policies, practices and public pedagogies associated with culture and education.

Our role

As ENCC, we will lead Work Package 2, 'SCALE the Inter-Cultural Competence Framework by building capability', whose objective is to enhance the implementation of research and innovation activities by providing training activities to local communities, socio-cultural centres and educational institutions across the world. Our members will have the opportunity to participate in the programme by applying to the open call that we will publish.

We will also co-lead Work Package 6, 'ADVANCE the Inter-Cultural Competence Framework through policy recommendations', aimed at identifying cultural and educational policy needs, developing recommendations, and translating them into policy spaces.
