La Cárcel — Segovia Centro de Creación
La Cárcel - Segovia Creation Centre is a cultural space opened in Segovia within the facilities of what once was the Provincial Prison of the city. As La Cárcel was not in use for one decade, Segovia City Council requested the management of the site to the relevant authorities. Since its reopening in 2011, the space was given a cultural use, so it could match the following objectives: Being a space that concentrates mostly contemporary creation — Being a space which promotes citizens creation — Decentralising cultural offer from the historical city centre to a new area where a traditionally depressed neighbourhood and the new Segovia growth axis join together. This way, cells and galleries remain, not as confinement centres anymore, but as spaces for artistic intervention - absolutely free. The aim is to make of Segovia itself a Centre in which Creation is a development force. In this framework, La Cárcel carries out Citizen's Creativity Laboratories (LABCCs), artistic calls, cultural programming, encounters around cultural industries, festivals, artistic and educational projects... La Cárcel's premises went through a lengthly remodelling process. Spaces were opened as they were restored, so that the community could follow the transformation process. Nevertheless, its structure as a former prison has been maintained, so that people can never forget that it used to be one.
