Museu Terra

Tarragona, Spain

Museu Terra was founded by the Carulla Foundation in a small town on the Costa Daurada, originally established to preserve and promote the legacy of the Mediterranean rural world. Undergoing modernisation in 2009, it expanded its mission to become a key player in the international fields of culture, rural life, and sustainable development. Today, its primary focus is on cultural and artistic education for sustainable development, which shapes the museum's strategic direction.

Each year, the museum organises a variety of events around this theme, including International Museum Day celebrations, an education and sustainability festival, concerts, and artist-led workshops. From an ethnological perspective, it explores how tangible and intangible heritage can inform educational strategies to address sustainability challenges. The museum houses an extensive collection of tools and objects related to traditional agriculture (olives, wine, and wheat), rural village life, and an archive of photography, oral history, and documents on natural health, food, and rural celebrations. Additionally, it features artistic works such as murals and sculptures depicting traditional professions, trades, and rural culture.

A core element of the museum is its ecological orchard and ethnobotanical garden, which anchors its commitment to environmental awareness and sustainable practices. Temporary exhibitions and activities address key sustainability issues, including plastic pollution, water resource management, clean energy, sustainable transport, the circular economy, and traditional trades. The museum also reflects on broader social and environmental themes, such as gender equality and migration, reinforcing its role as a platform for critical discourse and sustainable cultural engagement.
