ALASKA: Youth Voices in Times of War and Polarisation
Mariupol Theatre of Ukraine in Exile
Ukraine
ALASKA is an award-winning participatory theatre project born in Mariupol and now evolving in exile across Europe. In 2026, with the support of the Art Explora – Académie des beaux-arts – UNESCO European Award, it will expand through residencies in Poland and Italy. In each context, local youth, displaced Ukrainians and host communities co-create a multilingual performance about war, trauma, belonging and coexistence. The Up Grant will deepen this community phase through workshops, dialogue, public discussion and accessible sharing of our trauma-informed methodology and practice.
ALASKA expands an award-winning participatory theatre project from Mariupol into a structured social process for dialogue in times of polarisation. In 2026, alongside residencies in Poland and Italy supported by the Art Explora-Académie des beaux-arts-UNESCO European Award, the Up Grant will support its next community-based phase.Through workshops, testimony-sharing, co-creation & public discussion, young people, displaced Ukrainians and host communities will develop shared material, dialogue processes & public encounters together. The project addresses war, trauma, belonging, friendship, violence, exclusion and coexistence, while building empathy, trust and critical listening between groups that do not always meet on equal terms.Audience questionnaires, post-show dialogue and accessible dissemination of our trauma-informed methodology will help extend the impact beyond the stage, offering tools for educators, cultural mediators, social workers & socio-cultural centres.ALASKA offers a practical, replicable model that combines artistic excellence, youth participation, inclusion and cultural resistance, turning performance into a civic space for encounter, reflection and shared voice.
