AltGovs is a collective imagination initiative already taking shape in Peniche, creating spaces for dialogue and exploring new ways of relating to governance amid growing social and political polarisation. Participatory assemblies in school and municipal libraries bring together youth, residents, educators, and local actors to imagine alternative ways of organizing public life. Through workshops, storytelling and public conversations, the project reconnects youth with civic participation and fosters dialogue across generations and perspectives.
In Peniche, Portugal, a school library and the municipal library will be transformed into temporary civic laboratories. Through participatory assemblies, students, educators, residents, and local actors will explore governance via storytelling, speculative design and facilitated dialogue—sharing perspectives, questioning assumptions, imagining new ways decision-making and collective care could function. Komuhn, multidisciplinary team working at the intersection of design, collaboration and what-can-be, coordinates and facilitates the project connecting communities across generations and different perspectives. Early sessions with local high school provide a strong foundation for this next phase. In a city where youth often feel disconnected from institutions and public life, AltGovs creates rare spaces for meaningful dialogue, giving participants a tangible sense they can shape the systems that shape their lives. Responding to social and political polarisation, participants experiment, reflect and co-create alternative governance. The process culminates in a public event showcasing ideas via visuals, performances, and conversations. All methods are published online for adaptation.
