Through public discussions, artist talks and facilitated workshops, the initiative will explore artists’ democracy, fair remuneration and participation in cultural life. By bringing together artists, citizens and cultural stakeholders, the project will encourage dialogue about the value of artistic labour and the role of artists in the Icelandic economy and in democratic society at large.
This project will establish a participatory civic dialogue programme within Torg Listamessa, the annual art fair organised by SÍM – The Association of Icelandic Visual Artists – in Reykjavík. While the fair already provides a platform for artists to present and sell their work, the initiative will expand it into a space for dialogue about artists’ rights, fair remuneration and participation in cultural life.
Through a series of moderated discussions, artist talks and facilitated dialogue workshops, the project will bring together artists, audiences, cultural organisations, educators and policymakers to explore the role of artists in democratic societies. Visitors will be invited to participate actively in conversations about the value of artistic labour, the challenges artists face in sustaining their practice, and the conditions necessary for vibrant cultural ecosystems.
The discussions and contributions generated during the programme will be documented and compiled into a small publication bringing together artists’ voices, reflections and key insights emerging from the event. the project aims to strengthen public understanding of the role of artists in Icelandic society.
