This project will create a one-week, open-call collaborative atelier where participants collectively design and build a sound system while learning technical and creative skills through hands-on experimentation and shared knowledge. The initiative will bring together local musicians and community members, fostering collaboration and building a network around the association. The atelier aims to cultivate a community capable of developing future cultural initiatives. By creating its sound system, the association will gain autonomy to organise cultural events and support emerging local talent.
SMIL is a historic community association in Belém, a residential area of Lisbon increasingly pressured by tourism and gentrification, where spaces for grassroots cultural expression and community gathering have been progressively reduced. As in many Lisbon neighbourhoods, traditional coletividades have declined in recent decades, often disappearing due to a lack of generational renewal. Recently revitalised by younger members working alongside long-standing ones, SMIL represents a successful example of intergenerational collaboration addressing this challenge. The project proposes a collaborative atelier based on hands-on learning, collective experimentation and shared knowledge. Participants will work together to design and build a sound system while exploring the technical and creative processes behind it. Musicians, artists, technicians and local residents will collaborate in an open workshop environment that encourages peer exchange and practical learning. Beyond constructing the equipment, the atelier aims to cultivate a community capable of developing future cultural initiatives and reinforcing SMIL as a space for community-driven cultural expression.
