Created in 1848 and closed in 2011, the oldest psychiatric hospital in Portugal - Miguel Bombarda Hospital - currently awaiting its definitive future project - has been entangled in contradictions and sometimes disagreements regarding its significance and heritage protection. The mission of this cycle of quarterly debates is to create the appropriate field for different contributions to take shape, allowing an open discussion about the future of this public building, now closed.
It is more than certain that all urban planning processes concerning public heritage must listen to and involve the communities, bringing them into these places “in transition” and building a true sense of belonging.  We will promote a direct dialogue with the local and nonlocal community, government and non-government actors, raising awareness about the need to act so that the complex of buildings belonging to the former mental hospital Miguel Bombarda, a mostly vacant and expectant public space where Jardins do Bombarda Cultural and Community Center is located, does not remain empty and embraces the communities’ needs and desires. This cycle of debates will serve as a motif for a broader dialogue about the future of Lisbon as a city. The mission of this new cycle of quarterly conversations programmed between May and October 2026 is therefore to create the appropriate field for different contributions to take shape. Past, Present, and Future of Bombarda is a project that exists since the very beginning of the creation of Jardins do Bombarda Cultural and Community Center, in 2024.
