Exile Talks: Stand Up

Germany
Exile Talks: Stand Up! gives exiled journalists and artists in Germany a public platform for 5-minute storytelling performances. Germany hosts hundreds of creatives who fled repression, yet few spaces exist for them to share their work and stories. As authoritarianism rises globally, we bring their examples on stage — humanizing complex issues, inspiring audiences, and fostering empathy.
Through an open call, eight speakers are selected and receive storytelling coaching. At a Berlin event, each presents for 5 minutes, followed by Q&A. Stories are shared via social media for lasting impact.
The Exile Talks: Stand Up! project runs from May to August 2026 in five phases: (1) Open call inviting exiled journalists and artists in Germany to apply with video submissions; (2) Jury selection by three CORRECTIV journalists choosing 8 participants; (3) Individual storytelling coachingto develop accessible, impactful 5-minute stories; (4) Public evening event in Berlin featuring eight stories, moderated Q&A and networking reception; (5) Post-event documentation with professionally edited videos and social media content for sustained reach.
The format – exactly 5 minutes, no slides, personal storytelling – makes complex geopolitical topics accessible without oversimplification. The moderator creates a safe space for authentic dialogue where exiled journalists' and artists’ expertise meets audience curiosity. Topics span press freedom, digital security, gender-specific persecution, the fight against disinformation & censorship, personal experience of exile, integration in a foreign society and more.. The project emphasizes diversity: at least 50% female speakers, representation from 3+ world regions, and ages 20-50. Expected attendance: 60-80 people in-person, 500-1,000 online.
