Face your past!
eDemocracy Workshop Society
Hungary
Hungarian society – especially since the change of regime – has been torn in two along artificially created political fault lines. This has deep historical roots. Because of this, we carry centuries of individual, family and social traumas with us. Our project aims to provide tools for individual and collective confrontation, as well as a framework for dialogue about the past. The program is based on the widespread access to digitized historical memories – especially old newspapers –, community participation and the involvement of educational institutions.
The initiative aims to arouse the need for an honest confrontation with the past – individual and collective – by using the opportunities offered by digitalization. Our goal is to support the processing of individual, family, local and national pasts. We want to make the Sátoraljaújhely initiative implemented by our Association - see website - national. The next step is to create a city model, which would be implemented in the 18th district of Budapest.
The program is based on the wide access to digitized historical memories – especially old newspapers –, community participation and the involvement of educational institutions.
The project searches, organizes, digitizes and key-votes the documentation found in collections and in print, with community participation.
The result is an internet interface on which documentation related to the city area that has so far only been published offline can be searched. In addition, we would offer the opportunity to master the methodology of oral history interviewing in a small-scale educational program.
We promote the opportunities offered by the project in local media, on our social media pages, and the results in our own podcasts.
