In a time of rising racism and social polarisation across Europe, creating spaces for dialogue between communities is increasingly important. This project brings together residents of diverse cultural backgrounds in Tapada das Mercês through participatory cooking workshops. By preparing and sharing traditional dishes, participants exchange stories, cultural knowledge, and personal experiences. Food becomes a bridge for connection, helping to challenge stereotypes and build empathy. The project fosters social cohesion, celebrates cultural diversity, and strengthens community ties.
In a time of rising racism, Islamophobia, and social polarisation, creating spaces for dialogue between communities is vital. “Flavours of the World: Cooking as a Space for Dialogue in Tapada das Mercês” brings residents together through participatory intercultural cooking workshops. Each session is led by community members representing different culinary traditions, where participants learn, prepare, and share traditional dishes, exchange personal stories about food, memory, and identity, and enjoy a collective meal. Informal conversations foster dialogue, empathy, and understanding. The project culminates in a community event showcasing dishes, stories, and experiences. Through shared culinary experiences, it challenges stereotypes, strengthens social cohesion, celebrates cultural diversity, and empowers residents to build a more inclusive, connected community.
