In Antwerp Linkeroever there is no low-threshold shared space for intercultural exchange. As interaction increasingly happens online, polarisation grows. This project transforms Thonetje from a simple rental venue into a neighbourhood hub where residents engage in facilitated dialogue, bridging divides and translating conversations into shared artistic expression. It directly responds to the local policy requirement to build community-centred programming and aligns with the ENCC focus on dialogue in polarised societies.
Antwerp Linkeroever hosts many diverse communities, yet lacks a public space for genuine intercultural engagement. Thonetje currently functions mainly as a rentable venue, but the City of Antwerp’s agreement for its management calls for stronger neighbourhood programming and shared community ownership. This project transforms Thonetje into an intercultural dialogue hub over six months. It will organise six facilitated dialogue labs that combine structured discussions with creative methods, monthly open neighbourhood moments, and an artistic co-creation process where participants translate shared insights into a collective artwork or public presentation. The final phase culminates in a neighbourhood presentation event. By offering safe, in-person spaces for exchange, this initiative actively counters polarisation, fosters trust within diverse neighbourhood networks, and embeds democratic participation at the local level. It also strengthens volunteers’ roles in sustaining the space beyond the project.
