Hope Project Lesvos
Hope Project (Lesvos)
United Kingdom
The Hope Project, has been a beacon of support for refugees arriving on Lesvos since early 2015. We started our distribution warehouses in 2017 near the camp and serve new arrivals daily, offering essential items. As well as working with refugees we work with locals including the emerging services. We run spaces just for women such as a gym and salon but we also run an Art project, teaching everyone a safe form of expression and providing a bridge between cultures.
Our project is needed now more than ever, we are one of the only groups left on Lesvos assisting thousands of refugees as they arrive. We provide vital aid and support. We are constantly campaigning to raise awareness of the situation, through media, demonstrations, and art exhibitions. Art can often reach people who would not normally involve themselves with the refugee crisis. Only countries providing safe passage for refugees will change this situation. We feel that the escalating food crisis in many countries coupled with the environmental issues will only increase those fleeing to find safety. When we started assisting refugees arriving by boat, we honestly thought that we would only be needed for a short time, and that help would come. 9 years later we understand the situation much better, and we know help is not on the way. Basic aid is one of our core concerns so we offer essential items. However, we work with such a vast amount of different people that we focus on so much more depending on the needs of the individual. You need food we will cook you something, you need medical, we will go to the pharmacy for you, you need a shoulder to cry on, we will listen, you need a community we have got you, you want to sit and paint quietly, of course. There is something so human about the work that we do that is often lost in the eyes of the media, we are all human and we all need hope, we like to think that we are a glimpse of kindness in a hard-to-navigate world
