Magrafica addresses the complex and challenging topic of democracy by making it more open to discussion through art. At a time whe, democratic values are under pressure, Magrafica brings this subject into the context of art academies, encouraging students and teachers to introduce and explore it within their classes. Its participatory approach fosters dialogue, critical reflection, and a sense of shared responsibility. In addition, the exhibition tours across Belgium, extending the conversation beyond education and inviting broader public reflection and dialogue.
Magrafica is a participatory project that explores the topic of democracy through visual practice. Inspired by the socially engaged art of Frans Masereel, the initiative builds on the tradition of graphic art as a powerful medium for social reflection and critique. Magrafica works closely with art academies and schools to bring the topic of democracy into educational contexts and to mobilise students through an open call. Young people and emerging makers are invited to reflect on democratic challenges and to translate these reflections into graphic works, supported and guided by teachers. The resulting works form a touring exhibition that travels through Belgium. In each location, the exhibition is embedded in a local programme developed together with civil society organisations, libraries, schools, cultural centres, and local authorities. Local partners are encouraged to organise public activities such as debates, talks, and workshops, activating dialogue around democracy.
