Media: ways of seeing
Casa da Achada - Centro Mário Dionísio
Portugal
The project delivers workshops where journalists, educators, researchers, and civic actors guide participants through collective analysis of media, social networks, and advertising. It aims to exercise observation and interpretation to uncover power dynamics and manipulation within media discourse. Targeting communities with limited access to critical reading, writing, and image production, the project develops practical tools and encourages the creation of alternative narratives, fostering critical thinking, media literacy, and active engagement with information.
Casa da Achada - Centro Mário Dionísio is an association that brings together people from diverse backgrounds, experiences and ages to promote critical thinking, knowledge exchange and cultural intervention in the face of current issues. In a world dependent on technology and powerful media investment, this project stems from the need for critical tools to read, analyse and act critically on overwhelming information. The project offers four Critical Laboratory sessions: (1) Tools for critical analysis (2) Press and TV (3) Advertising (4) New media. Journalists, educators, researchers and civic actors guide participants in analysing contemporary media, developing practical tools, and collectively reflecting on findings. Each session concludes with a Forum to discuss challenges and solutions. Outputs include co-created written, audio, and video materials, and a Guide of analytical tools, ensuring continued access to findings and knowledge sharing.
