“Neurotopias” is a multilayered project consisting of a group exhibition and public program designed to reach beyond the traditional approach to mental health awareness and encourage cultural production as a tool of active civic engagement. This year, we're asking: What kind of system could accommodate people with different abilities and take into account more-than-human needs? Special attention is given to working with youth, focusing on digital literacy, critical reflection on technology and the skills required to navigate the digital world safely via an in-depth workshop.
This project is the seventh edition of our initiative to participate in the Mental Health Awareness Month with an annual exhibition and accompanying public program that uses artistic means to encourage open discussion about often stigmatized topics and their socio-political context. After discussing treatment gap, stigma, sexuality, education and neurodiversity, community care, and housing instability, we invited artists via an open call to reflect on what a truly accessible society would look like, materially, socially, infrastructurally. The open call format is a tool that ensures that the exhibition addresses the community’s needs, while the public program offers practical support to encourage outside-of-the-box thinking and active participation in decision-making on both the local and global levels. Special attention is given to working with youth, from prioritizing younger artists in their early careers and the perspectives and issues they want to present, to a dedicated in-depth workshop with a group of high school students focused on digital literacy, critical reflection on technology and the skills required to navigate the digital world safely.
