Starting from the theatre production “Ritual de Domingo – Where were you when you read your first newspaper?”, this grant application proposes the development of an innovative media literacy program, that uses art as a driver of critical citizenship, democratic participation, and cultural resistance. The play, which evokes intimate memories of the first contact with a newspaper, becomes the starting point for reflecting on the role of information in individual autonomy, freedom of expression, and decision-making.
Deriving from “RdD – Where were you when you read your first newspaper?” theatre play, we propose an innovative media literacy program: with art as a driver of critical citizenship, democratic participation, and cultural resistance. The play evokes intimate memories of the first contact with a newspaper, becoming the starting point for reflecting on the role of information in individual autonomy, freedom of expression, and decision-making. During a time marked by misinformation and fake news, we consider media literacy essential for strengthening civic skills and reinforcing local democracies. With the personal newspapers archive of Cristóvão Cunha, preserved since 1995, and testimonies of several journalists, it’s intended that a memory of journalism is rescued and that it illuminates the challenges and future paths of the info ecosystem. The project's development will be led by journalist Sandra R., 29 years of experience: worked for Público, Diário de Viseu, and Jornal do Centro. Her career crosses journalism, cultural mediation, and social inclusion collectives, bringing a unique experience to articulate artistic practices, critical reflection, and community involvement.
