Place of Creation & Specialising in Welcoming People in Psychological Suffering

La Broussaille (The Brushwood)
France
#
La Broussaille offers artists' residencies, creative workshops and immersion and respite stays, during which artists, craftspeople, local residents and people suffering from mental distress and/or a mental or psychological disability work together and interact in a variety of ways and at different times.

La Broussaille fosters and supports encounters and creative approaches between artists, craftspeople, researchers and people suffering from mental illness or mental disability. Our approach is multi-disciplinary, involving the performing arts (circus, theatre, choir, music, dance), the visual arts (painting, modelling, sculpture, drawing) and local know-how (ceramics, woodworking, landscaping).

We encourage individual projects and gestures, encounters, confrontation of views and practices, and co-creation within the privileged spaces of its living quarters, workshops and natural surroundings.

La Broussaille has forged an important network with professional artists who implement creative projects with its residents. It has also built up an extensive network with health and social care institutions, enabling their users to take part in co-creative activities. La Broussaille organises residency outings and events that provide an opportunity to present creative work, meet local people, share experiences in a spirit of great conviviality, and de-stigmatise issues of psychological suffering.

The venue includes a gîte for up to 15 people and a barn converted into a rehearsal and performance space. It is located in a very rural area and offers access to culture to people who are far from it. La Broussaille has two directors, a coordinating director who is a clinical psychologist, and an artistic director who is a scenographer. 6 people also sit on the managing board.
