Reality Check – Young Voices for Democracy & Belonging is an international youth jury programme within the dokumentART European Film Festival in Neubrandenburg. Five young participants aged 16–22 from Germany, Poland, France and Ukraine will watch and discuss short films from the festival programme. Through moderated discussions they will reflect on democracy, identity and social issues, select a Youth Jury Award and share their perspectives with the audience. The project empowers young people to actively participate in cultural decision-making and democratic dialogue through film.
The project brings together young participants aged 16–22 from Germany, Poland, France and Ukraine to engage with contemporary social and political issues through film. Between 8 and 12 October, the youth jury will watch and discuss a curated selection of short films from the festival programme, addressing themes such as democracy, identity, social justice and media narratives. Through moderated dialogue sessions, participants will exchange perspectives and reflect on how cinema can address social realities and strengthen democratic values. The jury deliberations will be accompanied by a film critic who will guide discussions, support critical film analysis and encourage thoughtful debate. Together, the jury members will decide on a Youth Jury Award. The participants will also share their reflections during a public event, creating space for dialogue between youth and audiences and strengthening democratic participation through culture. By integrating the youth jury into the festival programme, the project ensures that young people participate not only as audience members but also as active contributors to the cultural programme and decision-making processes of the festival.
