Rehearsing Democracy: Forum Theatre for Dialogue in Polarised Times is a participatory socio-cultural initiative that uses forum theatre to encourage civic dialogue and reflection. Inspired by the methodology of Augusto Boal, the project will bring together young people and community members in Daugavpils to transform real-life situations of conflict and social tension into interactive performances. During public sessions, audiences will be invited to step into the scenes and explore alternative responses, turning spectators into active participants and fostering empathy, critical thinking.
In times of increasing social polarisation, cultural spaces can serve as laboratories of democracy — places where people safely explore difficult questions, challenge stereotypes, and imagine alternative futures together. Through the methodology of forum theatre developed by Augusto Boal, participants will transform real-life situations of conflict, misunderstanding, and social tension into performative scenes open to collective intervention. The project will bring together young people and community members in Daugavpils to co-create short performances inspired by everyday experiences of division, misinformation, discrimination, and generational tensions. During public forum theatre sessions, audiences will be invited to step into the performance, replace characters, and test alternative actions. In this process, spectators become “spect-actors”, actively shaping the narrative and exploring possible solutions. Through this process, the project aims to strengthen community resilience, foster constructive dialogue across differences, and demonstrate how cultural practices can contribute to democratic life in contemporary Europe.
