Save the Oasis is an interactive public art project in southern Tunisia combining theatre, dance, and citizen participation to raise awareness about the environmental threats facing local oases, particularly in Gabès. By transforming public spaces into platforms for collective expression, it empowers communities, promotes environmental justice, and encourages international support. The project engages citizens directly, fosters dialogue between local communities, artists, and global audiences, and protects Tunisia’s unique natural and cultural heritage.
Save the Oasis is a participatory public art project in southern Tunisia, focused on the Gabès region, addressing the environmental threats facing local oases due to industrial pollution and unsustainable economic activities. The project organizes interactive performances in public spaces, combining theatre, dance, and citizen participation, turning audiences into active participants. Participants wear symbolic masks, reminiscent of those used during COVID-19, to highlight air pollution. Together, artists and citizens create human tableaux and visual messages promoting environmental protection, saving the oases, and environmental justice. The project transforms public spaces into platforms for collective expression and advocacy, empowering communities, fostering dialogue between locals, artists, and international audiences, and raising awareness globally about the urgent need to protect Tunisia’s unique natural and cultural heritage.
