Situated Cinema

Situated Cinema is a festival and gathering that celebrates the power of situated and diasporic (hi)stories in challenging times, when regenerative practices for humans and more-than-humans are urgently needed. By reflecting on the stories we need, the festival connects with pluriversal futures and ecotopias - ideas and processes that guide positive transitions on a complex yet resilient planet. Inspired by Le Guin’s Carrier Bag theory, it centres on small stories, soft power and collective care.
Situated Cinema is a festival exploring the power of situated and diasporic stories to foster dialogue across diverse communities. Collaborating with local and international actors from the fields of activism and communication, the festival prioritizes diverse participants to generate deep situated reflection and conversation. Guided by the Ecotopia framework, participants explore resilient ways of living, using low-tech and de-growth tools to tell stories grounded in local environments. The program includes workshops, field trips to forests and estuaries, ecological processing of audiovisual materials, and co-creation of narratives. The work is framed by critical awareness, reflecting on the impact of stories and how to generate desirable realities that confront dystopian mainstream narratives. Activities culminate in plural narratives and a situated screening, celebrating co-creation and intercultural dialogue as tools for meaningful social transformation that challenge stereotypes and strengthen community understanding.
The festival will take place from 20th to 25th of May 2025 at Sende, located on the edge of the Sado Estuary Nature Reserve, near Setúbal, Portugal.
