Stitching Democracy: Collective Cultural Resistance in Vienna

Amid rising social fragmentation and shrinking civic space, Stitching Democracy uses participatory crochet workshops to support civic engagement and amplify women’s voices. Building on Vienna’s tradition of textile craft as women’s creative labor, ten workshops bring together women across generations to co-create textile works reflecting lived injustice and imagining collective transformation. A public installation and digital campaign share these reflections, embedding community authorship within Vienna’s civic and cultural landscape.
As polarization rises in Vienna, strengthening civic engagement and inclusive community spaces is increasingly important. Stitching Democracy combines both, by supporting participatory dialogue and presenting a public installation as a statement of community voice. Drawing on craftivism tradition, which frames handcraft as intentional political practice, the project will bring together a diverse group of women in Vienna to co-create textile squares representing lived injustice, solidarity and hope for change. Over ten workshops across four months, participants will learn how to crochet, while exploring the history of handcrafts as a response to inequality and social exclusion. By the end of the project, participants’ handcraft pieces will form a two-week public installation in Vienna, likely in WUK or Brunnenpassage, accompanied by written reflections that contextualise each person’s artwork and create a collective narrative. For this project, we will aim to work with Women of Vienna and Frauen ohne Grenzen, to broaden participation and embed the initiative within Vienna’s civic ecosystem. A digital campaign will further amplify it online.
