Teatro do Imigrante: Reviving Cultural Space for Participation and Resistance

Associação Teatro do Imigrante
Portugal
Teatro-do-Imigrante-(2)
The project proposes the renovation of floors, walls and electrical system of a multipurpose room, which had been out of use since the pandemics, but has now been reactivated as the Teatro do Imigrante Cultural Space. The initiative aims to strengthen a place for social inclusion, artistic expression and the affirmation of migrant identities. By improving infrastructure, the project will better and support artists and audiences, expanding opportunities for creation and cultural exchange, as well as shedding light on diverse narratives within a democratic space of cultural resistance.
The intervention will provide the technical infrastructure needed to ensure safety and allow the continuity of the cultural activities hosted in the space, while valuing the building’s architectural, historical and symbolic character and preserving its original features. The intervention will be carried out by professional construction workers, with support from a team of volunteer associates of Associação Teatro do Imigrante. It will take place in three phases: 1- Electrical renovation of the room, including repair and replacement of damaged sockets, unsafe electrical connections, exposed wires, as well as the expansion of power outlets, maintenance of the lighting system and repair/replacement of non-functioning reflectors and PA monitors. 2- Renovation of the wooden floor, including removal and replacement of degraded sections and treatment against termite infestation to ensure greater safety for artists, technicians and equipment. 3- Restoration of the theatre walls, including repair of deteriorated areas, replacement of damaged coating, treatment of exposed surfaces, and preparation and repainting, restoring the theatre’s structural, functional and aesthetic conditions.
