The Madwoman of Chaillot is a new outdoor production by the Theatrical Workshop of Preveza and Artifactory, staged in a public space in Preveza, Greece. Written under Nazi occupation in 1943, Giraudoux's play is an act of cultural resistance whose themes, corporate greed, democratic erosion, and the subversive power of the "mad" outsider, speak urgently to today's crises. A post-performance dialogue will invite audiences to connect the play's tribunal to contemporary exploitation and civic disempowerment, transforming spectators into active participants and theatre into a tool of civic action
The Madwoman of Chaillot is a new outdoor theatrical production by the Theatrical Workshop of Preveza and Artifactory, staged in an open public space in Preveza, Greece. Directed and adapted by Lili Sakka, the production brings Giraudoux's visionary 1943 play, written under Nazi occupation, into direct conversation with today's crises: democratic erosion, environmental destruction, and the commodification of public life. Aurelia is not mad — she simply refuses to accept a world ruled by greed and conformity. By staging her story in open public space, we activate that space as a site of civic imagination, making theatre accessible to all. Following the performance, a structured dialogue facilitated by Kostis Papaioannou, civic educator and democracy trainer, will invite audiences to move from spectators to participants. Drawing on the play's logic of the people's tribunal, it will explore: Who are today's Presidents and Barons? What does resistance without institutional power look like? And when does "madness" become a political act? The project positions socio-cultural practice as a laboratory where art, public space, and critical dialogue converge to strengthen democracy.
