The project explores urban peatlands, highlighting their ecological and military role and their place in the mental map of city residents. The parallel program expands from local (Lviv) to national (Ukraine) and international contexts, examining peatlands as natural barriers and vital ecosystems globally. It includes field visits to peatlands with natural scientists, immersing participants in the landscape. The exhibition component deconstructs the hierarchy between “living” and “non-living,” giving voice to peatlands and their artifacts through a narrative.
This art–science project explores urban peatlands, highlighting their ecological and military significance and their place in the mental map of city residents. It focuses on peatlands in Lviv, rich wetland ecosystems supporting rare plants, waterbirds, and biodiversity within an urban context. The project actively involves local community in workshops, discussions, and “Walking Labs” guided field visits, allowing participants to experience and study the landscapes firsthand. The parallel program expands from local (Lviv) to national (Ukraine) and international contexts, exchanging local and global insights. The exhibition component, drawing on Bruno Latour’s ideas to deconstruct the hierarchy between “living” and “non-living,” giving voice to peatlands and their artifacts through a narrative method. The final catalog documents the year-long research, ensuring insights, artworks, and experiences remain accessible beyond the exhibition. By integrating research, art and community participation, the project raises awareness of peatlands as vital ecological systems and living archives, fostering sustainable engagement and imaginative urban memory.
